Why fridge positioning deserves more thought than it usually gets
The fridge is one of the biggest, heaviest, most-used appliances in any kitchen — yet it’s often the last thing properly considered in a layout. Benchtops, cabinetry and splashbacks get all the attention, and the fridge gets squeezed into whatever gap is left. The result can be a door that won’t open all the way.
Key Advice: Don’t rush out and buy a fridge before you have considered a few very key issues. A fridge on special this week might seem a good deal, until you try to fit it into your kitchen, and you face unplanned additional costs.
The door swing problem
Every fridge door needs room to swing well past 90 degrees to pull drawers and shelves fully out — not just to open. If a fridge sits hard against a wall, an island, or a run of cabinetry, that door will stop short, and you’ll spend years wrestling crisper drawers out at an angle. As a rule of thumb, allow roughly 550–600mm of clearance beside the hinge side for the door to swing freely, and at least 900mm of clear floor space in front for loading and unloading comfortably. French-door and side-by-side models need even more, since two doors are swinging at once.

Why the fridge often needs to protrude
Standard benchtops and base cabinets are typically around 560–620mm deep. Most full-size fridges are deeper than that — often 650–750mm including doors and handles — and they also need clearance at the back and sides for ventilation, plus airflow space above. Trying to force a standard fridge flush with the cabinetry almost always fails: either it overheats from poor airflow, or the doors can’t open against the bench beside it. In most kitchens, the fridge needs to sit slightly proud of the surrounding cabinetry rather than flush with it. This is completely normal and, when planned for from the start, doesn’t look out of place — it’s only a problem when it’s a surprise discovered after the cabinetry has already been built.

There are fridges (and freezers) available designed to fit flush with cabinetry, but you will need to purchase a fridge designed to do so and also the required depth of cabinetry to accommodate it.

Getting it right from the start
A few habits prevent almost every fridge-fit problem we see:
- Measure the actual fridge — including handles and hinge gap — before finalising cabinetry, not the other way around.
- Check door swing against every nearby obstacle: walls, islands, adjacent cabinets, and even the pantry door.
- Plan for a standard fridge to sit slightly forward of the benchtop edge rather than forcing it flush — and design the joinery either side to intentionally step around it.
- Consider an integrated fridge designed to be flush with your cabinetry if this is your desired outcome.
- Confirm ventilation clearances with the manufacturer’s specs — they vary by model and do matter for both performance and warranty.
Getting the fridge position right early saves a costly cabinetry rework later. It’s a small planning step that makes the difference between a kitchen that works every day and one that quietly frustrates you every time you reach for the milk.
