A straight answer on timing for Auckland homeowners, from Elite Kitchens by Mastercraft, building Auckland kitchens since 1958.
Every year it happens. Someone rings us in late November, wanting a new kitchen in time to host the family for Christmas lunch. And every year we have to give them the same answer: No Chance!
We don't like saying no. So here's the timing laid out plainly, while there's still time to act on it.
The short answer
To have a new kitchen installed before Christmas, you need your design signed off by mid-October. That means booking your free design consultation in the next week or two.
Call us on 09 298 8388 or book at elitekc.co.nz/book/.
Why mid-October?
A new kitchen isn't built on site. At Elite, your cabinetry is made to measure in our Papakura factory, then installed, then your benchtops are templated and fitted to the finished cabinetry. Each step has to happen in order. Here's how long each one typically takes:
| Step | Typical time | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Design consultation and measure | Before you sign | We visit, measure, and design your kitchen with you. |
| Melamine cabinetry | About 4 weeks | From signed contract to installation. |
| Thermoform or lacquered cabinetry | About 6–7 weeks | From signed contract to installation. |
| Benchtops | Add 10–14 days | Templated, made and installed once the cabinetry is in. |
Work that backwards from a signed contract in mid-October and this is roughly where you land:
| Your finish choice | Cabinetry installed | Kitchen finished |
|---|---|---|
| Melamine | Mid-November | Late November |
| Thermoform or lacquered | Early December | Mid-December |
Melamine gives you a comfortable buffer before the holidays. Lacquered and thermoform finishes still make it, but there's less room for anything to move. All dates are indicative and depend on your design being finalised and your site being ready.
Five things to do this week
If a new kitchen for Christmas is on your wish list, here's how to give yourself the best chance:
- Book your free design consultation now. This is the step that starts the clock. Everything else follows from your signed design.
- Keep your layout. If your sink, oven and cooktop stay roughly where they are, there's no plumbing or gas relocation to schedule and usually no building consent needed. Auckland Council consents typically take 4–8 weeks, which on its own rules out a Christmas install.
- Choose your appliances early. Your cabinetry is built around your appliances, so we need exact models and dimensions before we can finalise the design. Retailers get busy before Christmas, so lock these in early.
- Think about your finish. Melamine is the quickest to manufacture and comes in a wide range of colours and woodgrains. If you've got your heart set on lacquered, that's fine, just move fast.
- Sort out your budget. Talk to your bank or broker now if you're planning a mortgage top-up or renovation loan. Knowing your number before the consultation means we can design to it straight away. Our Auckland kitchen cost guide gives you real 2026 price ranges.
What if you miss the Christmas deadline?
Then you're still in a good spot, as long as you start now. Homeowners who complete their design before Christmas are first in the queue when the factory gets going again in the new year.
January is one of our busiest enquiry periods, because everyone spends the holidays standing in a kitchen they've had enough of. Getting your design done in October or November means you skip that queue and get one of the first installation slots of 2027.
Our factory closes from 23 December 2026 and reopens on 11 January 2027.
Why Elite can move faster than most
- We make it ourselves. Your cabinetry is built in our own Papakura factory, not down country, not imported. No waiting on overseas shipping, and no surprises at the port.
- You see it before it's installed. We invite you to view your kitchen in the factory before it goes in.
- Quality that lasts. We use NZ-made board certified to E0 or E1 formaldehyde emission standards, and European hardware from Blum, Hafele and Hettich, which carries lifetime warranties.
- We've done this before. Elite has been building Auckland kitchens since 1958, and we hold a 4.8-star Google rating from more than 70 Auckland homeowners.

Your questions answered
Can I still get a new kitchen before Christmas if I start now?
Yes, if you sign off your design by mid-October and keep your existing layout. Melamine cabinetry takes about 4 weeks from signed contract to installation, with benchtops following 10–14 days later. Book a design consultation as soon as possible to give yourself the best chance.
Which kitchen finish is the fastest to make?
Melamine. It typically takes around 4 weeks from signed contract to installation, compared with 6–7 weeks for thermoform and lacquered finishes.
Do I need a building consent for a new kitchen?
Usually not. Replacing cabinetry, benchtops and appliances in the same positions doesn't need a consent. You will need one if you're removing or altering a load-bearing wall. Consents take Auckland Council around 4–8 weeks, so a structural change would push your project into the new year.
What does a new kitchen cost in Auckland?
Most Auckland homeowners spend between $25,000 and $60,000. A refresh starts from around $6,000, and premium custom kitchens can run to $100,000 or more. See our Auckland kitchen cost guide for the full breakdown.
Don't leave it until November
